Phone charging is the part of this market where buyers most often pay for something they cannot use. A phone draws power up to its own ceiling, and which ceiling applies depends on the protocol it can negotiate. Buying a 140W charger for a phone that peaks at 27W costs money without changing anything measurable.
Which protocol applies to which phone
| Device family | Protocol that matters | Typical outcome |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone | USB Power Delivery | Peak draw around 27W; any PD charger at 30W or above is sufficient |
| Samsung Galaxy | PD with PPS | Full rate requires PPS; without it, roughly 15W |
| Chinese Android brands with proprietary fast charging | Vendor-proprietary scheme over the vendor's own charger | A third-party charger typically delivers the 10–18W standard-protocol baseline only |
| Most other USB-C Android phones | USB Power Delivery, sometimes QC | Fast charging at the phone's rated rate |
How much power a phone actually needs
For a phone alone, 20–30W covers almost every case, and a compact charger in that band is usually the most economical choice. Where the same charger must also serve a tablet or a laptop, the requirement is set by the largest device, not by the phone.
- Match the protocol list to the phones in the household. A PPS-capable charger is worth the small premium if any Samsung device is involved.
- Do not treat proprietary fast charging as transferable. If a phone only reaches its top rate with its own brand's charger, no third-party unit will change that. What a third-party charger offers is one device doing the job of several at a good standard rate.
- Check the cable. An under-rated cable caps charging irrespective of the charger's rating, and it is the most common cause of a phone charging more slowly than expected.
- Low-current support for accessories. Earbuds and wearables benefit from a charger that recognises small batteries.
