65W is the practical centre of the GaN market. It is enough to charge an ultraportable laptop at full rate, enough to fast-charge most phones, and small enough that the charger still fits in a coat pocket. Above this point the housing grows and the cost rises faster than the everyday benefit; below it, a laptop charges slowly and may discharge under load.
What 65W covers
| Device | Typically supported |
|---|---|
| 13–14 inch ultraportable laptop | Full-rate charging on a single USB-C port |
| Phone | Fast charging, subject to protocol matching |
| Tablet | Fast charging over USB-C |
| Earbuds and wearables | Supported; a low-current mode is safer for small batteries |
| Gaming laptop or 16-inch workstation | Not sufficient; the battery will drain under sustained load |
What to check before buying
- USB PD support, and PPS if relevant. PD covers most phones and all USB-C laptops. A Samsung device only reaches its full rate with PPS, so check for it if that is the phone in question.
- The power distribution table. A 65W rating is shared across ports. A typical dual-port split is 45W + 20W, which means a laptop will not receive its full rate while a second device is charging. This table, not the headline wattage, determines real-world behaviour.
- Cable rating. A charger is only as good as the cable attached to it. A bundled cable removes the risk of pairing a 65W charger with an inadequate lead.
- Foldable pins. The difference between a charger that is genuinely portable and one that is not. Flat-folding pins also avoid scuffing adjacent items in a bag.
- Certification. Confirmed safety certification and the standard four-protection set matter more on a unit that may stay plugged in overnight.
Where to start
Two of the reviews in this library cover 65W three-port units in detail, including measured charge times, port behaviour under simultaneous load and travel ergonomics:
