Travelling with a charger is a question of volume as much as of power. For a phone, a tablet and an ultraportable, 45W is frequently the better answer than 65W: the charger is smaller and lighter, the cable requirements are simpler, and the devices concerned rarely accept more than 45W on a single port in any case.
What a display adds
A small status screen is the feature that separates this format from a conventional compact charger, and it is more useful than it first appears.
- Confirmation of fast charging. Live output power shows whether a device is actually fast charging or has fallen back to a slow baseline because of a protocol mismatch or an inadequate cable. Without a display, that situation is invisible.
- Temperature feedback. A temperature reading makes it practical to check the charger before leaving it connected overnight.
- Which device is drawing what. Device identification helps when several items are attached and one is charging slowly for no obvious reason.
What to check before buying
- Weight and volume. The point of the format is portability. Around 80 g with foldable pins is a reasonable benchmark for 45W.
- Fixed voltage steps. Support for the standard USB PD fixed profiles at 45W covers phones, tablets and ultraportables predictably.
- Thermal control. A compact body has less thermal mass. Predictive control that adjusts output before temperatures rise is preferable to reactive derating.
- Certification. Confirmed certification under the applicable regional scheme, plus the standard protection set: over-voltage, over-current, over-temperature and short circuit.
