Slim 10,000 mAh power bank

One pocket-sized pack, roughly one and a half phone charges, and a set of ratings worth reading before the size is settled.

The 10,000 mAh class is the most competitive in the category, and the differences between units are rarely about capacity. Two packs of the same nominal rating can diverge by 40g in weight, by ten minutes in recharge time and by whether either can charge a phone at its full rate. The specifications below decide which of those happens.

Rated capacity against delivered charge

A 10,000 mAh pack is measured at the cell voltage of 3.7V, while a phone takes power at 5V or higher. The conversion, plus losses in the boost circuit, means a pack usually delivers around 6,000 to 6,600 mAh at 5V — roughly 31 to 34 Wh. In practice that is one full charge of a large phone and most of a second, or two to three charges of a smaller handset. The figure printed on the case is not the figure delivered.

What the numbers on a 10,000 mAh pack actually mean.
FigureTypical valueWhat it decides
Rated capacity10,000 mAh at 3.7VStored energy, the basis of the airline limit
Rated energy36–37 WhWell inside the 100 Wh cabin threshold
Delivered capacity6,000–6,600 mAh at 5VHow many charges the phone receives
Output20–30WWhether a phone charges at its own top rate
Input18–22WTime to refill the pack itself

Pouch cells against cylindrical cells

Almost every slim pack in this class uses lithium-polymer pouch cells, which can be shaped to fill a flat enclosure. Cylindrical cells, the 18650 or 21700 type, hold more energy for their volume and cost less, but their fixed diameter sets a floor on thickness. That is why the slimmest packs are pouch-based and why they are also the ones least tolerant of being crushed or left in a hot car. Where a case has to survive a bag, a slightly thicker cylindrical pack is the more durable object, even at the same capacity.

Output: what the port list does not tell you

  • Single-port output is the figure that matters. A pack advertised at 30W often reaches that only on one port with nothing else attached. Charging two devices at once usually splits the total, so plan around the single-device case.
  • Protocol support decides the rate. USB Power Delivery covers modern phones, tablets and small laptops. PPS is worth having if a Samsung handset is involved. A pack that lists only proprietary standards will charge other brands slowly.
  • Input rating is the overlooked one. A 10,000 mAh pack at 18W input takes about two hours to refill, against roughly three at 10W. Since a pack this size is usually charged overnight, this matters less than in the larger classes.
  • Low-current mode. Earbuds and smartwatches draw so little current that some packs shut off. A dedicated low-current mode, or an explicit small-device rating, avoids waking up to a watch that never started charging.

Before buying

  • Check the rated energy in watt-hours, which is the figure security staff read. A 10,000 mAh pack is around 37 Wh and is inside every cabin limit in force.
  • Check whether the cable is captive or bundled. A captive cable removes the accessory most often left behind; a bundled cable allows replacement when it wears out.
  • Check the pass-through behaviour if the pack is intended to sit between a wall charger and a phone overnight. Not every unit charges itself and a phone at the same time.
  • Check the quoted weight rather than the pictures. This class ranges from about 180g to 260g, and the difference is felt in a jacket pocket.
